Windows Vista not likely to succeed in 2008
It’s a new year and some would say “new beginnings,” but that’s probably not going to be the case for Microsoft’s flagship operating system, Windows Vista. The final version of Vista SP1 is due at some point in the coming weeks but that’s little consolation to users that already have mounds of compatibility problems that won’t be fixed in the service pack. With Windows 7 only two years away, there isn’t much motivation for most to upgrade to Vista.
All new computers are shipping with Vista but Microsoft was hoping to sell more upgrade versions or full retail editions but that just didn’t happen due to poor driver support, older peripheral support and several other nagging hardware issues such as a 3GB memory limitation in 32-bit versions which is still a problem.
Information Week says Windows XP is still the most common operating system running and that’s not likely to change any time soon. Support for that operating system continues through the end of 2011 but that will likely be extended because the XP user base will probably still be quite extensive.
I feel that the primary reason Vista is not going to do well in the coming years is that if you know that a better operating system is just two or three years away, skip the lesser and go for the better when the time is right. The time just wasn’t right for Vista, Microsoft even came close to admitting Vista wasn’t all it could have been. Windows 7 will probably be what we were all expecting for Vista.
Vista isn’t bad, if you buy it preinstalled on a new computer, just be prepared to throw out any peripherals that aren’t a keyboard and mouse older than five years.

What makes you think 7 is going to delivered on schedule? Certainly nothing Microsoft has done. 7 had best be revolutionary ala 2000 vs 98, not a more resource intensive, buggy disaster with no clear advantage over XP. This has been a screwup of major, historic proportions. Pity. I really wanted to like Vista.
Vista isn’t bad? It’s made every worse tech list I’ve seen. Go through the Vista articles on this website and tell me what how many are negative, and most are written by you. You have battered
wives syndrome. The irony of this is even better when your anti-Linux rants are factored in.
From your Everex $199 Linux PC is the suck article:
“I would agree with their recommendation that anyone considering this pick up a $450 desktop with Vista that offers a bit more expandability.Just because something sells well does not mean it is a good product.”
I guess just because an item is expensive, and forced/crammed on consumers who overwhelming reject it, it’s a good product. 99% of the reviews on Walmart’s site are very positive.

The fact that the negative reviews are from people who think a superior OS must behave like Windows

Well, it’s the only time frame we have to operate on and yes, Windows 7 may be delayed or it may not, it may ship on time or it may not, no one knows and it’s too early to tell.
Yes, Vista has made ever “worst tech list” that I can think of. But moving back to XP would be a moot point as driver support is ending for that operating system and I’d rather have my hardware work on a “bad” operating system than half work or not work at all on a “better” operating system.
$450? An expensive desktop? Surely, you’re joking.
The professional reviews of the gPC were not so glamorous. It is slow and it is underpowered, you cannot deny this but I guess that doesn’t matter to the people who are buying it and may not know better and my guess is they don’t.

I agree. Windows Vista is picking up user base, but I’m not confident that it will exceed XP before 2010. However, it is true that Windows 7 may be delayed, but when you say that in two years there will be a good Windows OS, why would people spend so much time and money on Vista now? Windows 7 better not be a flop, otherwise Microsoft can kiss their user base goodbye.

$450 is expensive when the item you’re comparing it to is over 100% less expensive. I’m not surprised the “professional” reviews dogged it. This wasn’t meant for them. A tack hammer is underpowered compared to a sledge hammer, it doesn’t mean the sledge hammer is better for hanging pictures, and the tack hammer is worthless. For all the elitist commentary of the superior judgment you possess over the suckers being preyed upon, you remain a mono skilled judge without the knowledge, skill or experience to give an educated opinion on the subject. I rag on Microsoft on a regular basis. I’m also an MCSE, an IT director and have been to Redmond several times in the last few years at CIO summits where Balmer and crew tries to keep us from jumping ship, each year getting more desperate. If Apple ever decides to take on the enterprise, and sets up the infrastructure necessary to be successful, MS is looking at 70% marketshare. My responsibilities won’t let me do a 5 year budget with “Windows 7 may be delayed or it may not, it may ship on time or it may not, no one knows and it’s too early to tell.” The company CFO would fire me.

After all the years of Windows usage I could add 20 million comments about why not Vista go XP and the rest. Simple fact is I would be very seriously happy with a windows 2000 update system where it just very simply worked. I do not need pointless things massive and shiny and any options of use hidden in 20 million sub menus.
