Windows Home Server flaw deletes files

December 31, 2007

homeserver If Microsoft thought it had problems with Vista, entirely new problems have cropped up in Windows Home Server.  At least Vista doesn’t go around corrupting and deleting files, as Windows Home Server has been shown to do.

It’s possible, that when working with certain types of files in certain applications that Windows Home Server  just might see fit to delete that file or corrupt it beyond recognition.

According to Microsoft the specific applications include,

Windows Vista Photo Gallery
Windows Live Photo Gallery
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
Microsoft Money 2007
SyncToy 2.0 Beta

Also, "there have been customer reports of issues with Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken, and with QuickBooks program files. Our support team is currently trying to reproduce these issues in our labs."

However, not all installations of Windows Home Server are affected and ZDnet says that there must be very specific conditions under which it malfunctions.  One of the primary conditions that seems to cause this is the operating system being under a heavy load.

    What’s a heavy load? Booting?

  2. Jonathan:

I guess that would mean using 99% of the CPU while using those applications and trying to save files to the hard drive at the same time. This flaw is difficult to replicate and shouldn’t affect most users.

Most of the Apps in danger are no big deal. I’m curious how you get a 99% load with Money?

Never mind, per the article you linked:
•A home server is under an extreme load. For example, lots of files are being copied to the home server. At the same time, a user is editing files that are already saved in a shared folder on the home server.
•The program that the user is using to edit these files is one of the programs that are listed in this article.
