Vista SP1 public beta now available via Windows Update

By Jonathan Schlaffer

RC1 It’s finally here, Vista SP1 public beta has finally hit Windows Update but it’s not as easy as simply going to Windows Update and downloading SP1.

Microsoft details the process needed to install Vista SP1 on most installations of Vista.  First you will need to download a small file that edits and changes some registry settings, this allows Windows Update to see prerequisite updates required for Vista SP1, it may take a few tries before it can see and install them.

Second, install all “important updates” that Windows Update locates, see above.  Steps three and four involve installing some more prerequisite updates which may require several reboots and scans of Windows Update before Vista SP1 (KB936330) is available.

Once you see that update, download and install and you will be done.

Of course, this isn’t as easy as it will be when the final release hits and as such should not be attempted by computer novices.  It’s not hard but then again it shouldn’t be this difficult.

What happened to providing standalone downloads that required validation?  Perhaps that’s not the way things are done in Vista land.

Either way, Vista SP1 is finally available, even if it is a beta.
