Do not skip Vista, do not wait for Windows 7, do not pass go

By Jonathan Schlaffer

seven Some businesses have decided to delay rolling out Windows Vista until late 2008 or 2009 which is understandable considering the effort that must be put in to hardware and software before making the move.  But, some have decided that it might be best to skip Vista entirely and wait for Windows 7.

When Vista finally released, it was nearly two years behind schedule and was or rather is still full of several annoying issues/bugs.  Not to mention the several features that have been removed like the new WinFS file system which just might make it as part of Windows 7.

Gartner Research revealed to ZDNet that businesses should not be so quick to dismiss Windows Vista because Windows 7 may be subject to similar delays and upgrade problems.

If some organizations do indeed to skip Vista, Gartner says they will be running Windows XP far longer than they would actually like to and a forced as well as rapid move to Windows 7 before they are ready would probably have to happen.

The other side of the coin is if it would be as difficult to move to Windows 7 as it is to Vista then it may be advantageous for some to wait, depending on their individual situations.

“Install my disaster of an operating system now, because the next one may be years late and also suck.” Unreal. Too bad you had to lay a turd at a time when people have real, viable alternatives. Playing greed games with the versions, rolling over for content providers by having in kernel DRM bloat choke performance. Microsoft has become IBM in the 1980’s, too inbred and smug to recognize it’s own death throes. The total price of running Microsoft in your business is becoming unacceptable.

I think it actually does make more sense to skip Vista and go straight from XP to Windows 7, or even to Mac OS X or Linux. XP software will still be supported by 2010, so there isn’t much need to upgrade, and the skip would save the companies a good deal of time and money.

Microsoft seems to be making a lot of promises about how much better Office 7 is going to be than Vista. Namely, they’ve apparently made a lot of improvements when it comes to the system usage issues (because Vista uses a LOT of resources). It will be interesting to see if it works as well as the hype has stated and also if it will work so well that it will make Vista somewhat obsolete.
