Increase in malware attacks on Vista expected next year

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Increase in malware attacks on Vista expected next year Believe it or not there are people out there running Vista and enjoying their experience.  But that may be short lived if some predictions come true.  McAfee analysts are expecting malware attacks on Vista to increase next year as it will move past 10% market share.

Don’t be fooled, hackers “hack” in order to make money or scam people and if the operating system you are using has a low market share then they aren’t going to bother.  But, as that share increases, so do attacks on that operating system.

PC World caught up with Craig Schmugar, a researcher at McAfee’s Avert Lab said that Vista hasn’t really been a worthwhile target but will be more enticing come next year.

McAfee also expects 40 vulnerabilities to crop up in Vista early next year which may or may not already have exploits in the wild at this very moment.  The saying goes “something new, something borrowed, something old” and Vista is all three which hackers will no doubt take advantage of.

Let this serve as a reminder to keep your malware protection up to date (despite which version of Windows you are running).
