88 million copies of Vista sold
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Leave it to Microsoft to claim that over 88 million copies of its flagship operating system have sold. Vista might be selling but these days it gets more bad reviews than good but Microsoft knows how to sell a bad product.
Besides those 88 million copies that have been sold, 42 million PCs now have a Vista license through corporate volume contracts (I’m betting that 88 million figure includes those 42 million).
Vista was a big part of the reason Microsoft earned $13.76 billion in its most recent first fiscal quarter. Around 75% of the operating system that has sold has been of the “Premium” version because “Basic” is more or less useless, home users have no need for “Business” which actually lacks a few features of “Premium” but includes tools for business users and “Ultimate” in many cases is just too much.
Still, ZDnet notes that Microsoft’s sales figures are to the channel and do not actually represent sales to customers. More importantly, I would like to see Microsoft itself release figures for the install base of Vista.
