Free Vista Sunday, CCleaner fixes registry and deletes junk files

By Jonathan Schlaffer

CC You were one of the first to buy that copy of Vista, install it and use it and use it and use it without ever thinking about all those junk files and useless registry entries that gum up the system over a period of time.  That’s where a free utility known as CCleaner (aka Crap Cleaner) comes in.

CCleaner will scour your hard drive for useless junk files, including temporary Internet files, cookies, browsing history, recently used URLs, unused index files and will also clean out some Windows system files that are no longer needed.  It’s much more thorough than the included disk cleanup utility.

It also has a registry scanner/cleaner.  This part of the program scans the registry for no longer needed entries and will delete them, of course, some programs can come back with false positives and delete an entry you need but I’ve never seen, noticed or heard that problem on CCleaner.

CCleaner does not have the ability to “repair” the registry per se, it just deletes useless flotsam.  If you want the ability to actually “repair” corrupted registry entries then you will need to search for a program to do that and I promise that it won’t be free.  CCleaner is about as good as a cleaning utility you will get for free.  It is also compatible with Windows XP.
