PC Advisor: 67% prefer Windows XP over Vista upgrade

PC Advisor: 67% prefer Windows XP over Vista upgrade Criticism over Microsoft’s latest attempt at an operating system, Vista, has been insulted more times than perhaps even Windows ME was.  From bad driver support, though, that is improving to botched installations it never seems to end.

Not even Windows XP received so much negative attention so what makes Vista different?  Driver support is indeed improving and there’s no doubt that the most outspoken people are those who had real difficulty, those using Vista successfully stay quiet because the negative comments prevail on the great wide world that is the Internet.

Though, there are some very real problems with Vista that need to be solved, slow file transfers, networking issues and “out of memory” errors (on systems with 2GB+ worth) just to name a few.

PC Advisor surveyed its readers and found out that 67% would prefer their new computer come with Windows XP over Vista.

Of course, the first thing anyone is likely to notice about Vista is the flashy Aero Interface, provided your PC has the hardware to run it, it’s one of Vista’s main attractions but it’s not terribly useful and simply serves as eye-candy but I’m a sucker for eye-candy.

Some of those that participated in the poll were considering making the move over to Linux or purchasing a Mac if Vista were the only choice.

Windows XP will be available for purchase (in some form) until June 2008 and mainstream support for Windows XP SP2 will end on April 14, 2009 though Windows XP SP3 (when/if released) will probably result in an extension of support for that version only.

If you decide to pass over Vista and go the XP route but like the Vista interface, read our article “How to make XP look like Vista for free.”

Interesting statistic. In addition to this, Steam (Valve gaming) does stats on gaming OSes by who connects, and what with. Only 8% of gamers using Steam are using Vista. Vista, despite the “eye candy”, which Linux has had for far longer, is a giant steaming loaf. It is slow except on stupid hardware, buggy and has a DRM core, which is way too “big brother” like for me. I will game on XP for as long as it still runs. My main OS is Linux simply because I do not feel Windows in any form is reliable or secure enough to use as a desktop, in business or personal use. I find it highly amusing the idiots at Redmond have completely shot themselves in the foot with this one. Can you say Microsoft Bob?
