Windows XP SP3 includes some Vista features

Windows XP SP3 includes some Vista featuresWindows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) beta, which was released last week to a select group of testers, includes new features and components borrowed from Windows Vista.

According to NeoSmart Technologies, “Contrary to popular belief, Windows XP SP3 does ship with all-new features – not just patches and hotfixes, most of them backported from Windows Vista.”

The features backported from Vista include the Network Access Protection, an enterprise policy enforcement technology that inspects client PCs before they access a corporate network and the Windows Product Activation model, which doesn’t require you to enter a product key during setup.

Other new features include a Black Hole Router detection algorithm and improved support for cryptographic algorithms.

It seems that Vista isn’t the only operating system Microsoft is working to improve. This action by Microsoft could be another sign that it will continue to support Windows XP for the foreseeable future.

The beta of Windows XP SP3 Build 3205 is 334.2 megabytes in size and is shipped as windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe.

Microsoft is expected to release Windows XP SP3 in the first half of 2008.
