Windows Vista is already past its expiration date

Microsoft releases Vista’s Ultimate Extra – DreamScene, delays 19 othersWhen Windows Vista first came out, I was one of the first to get it, at first, I liked it, sure it had quirks but it was okay for being new.  Now, something has happened that has caused me to reevaluate that position.  Vista isn’t so great after all, if you have the stomach for it, details are within.

Just yesterday I was attempting to finish up some work for this very website, some projects and finish cataloging movies, music and other media stored on my hard drive but Vista had other plans.  Right in the middle of everything, the display goes blank, it’s not sleeping, it’s not hibernating because I heard some errors and alerts sound off.  Those alerts were telling me that there were some driver errors which I would not discover until I rebooted.

The display driver had crashed as well as the wireless card, the severity of which is both annoying and serious at the same time.  Until this incident happened the wireless card was working perfectly but for reasons unknown, Vista refused to acknowledge the physical existence of the card.

A visit to the device manager showed no wireless card installed, rescanning for devices didn’t help either.  There was only one more software solution left to do, system restore.

Not even a system restore fixed the problem so the only solution was to open the back of the laptop and physically uninstall the card and reinstall it.  That turned out to only be half the battle, after doing so, Vista recognized the card and offered to install drivers for a card that was working perfectly not a half hour before these events took place.

After that, it wasn’t seeing my wireless network but acknowledged the card once again.  The SSID to my network is not hidden but I still had to manually enter all of the information (again) for a network that I had been using on this laptop for 6 months without problem.

I don’t know what happened, I don’t know why the display driver didn’t recover itself, the first time so I could have at least done the diagnostics without rebooting, I don’t know why Vista suddenly decided that the wireless card didn’t exist but all I know is here I am half out of my mind in the late night hours trying to sort out a problem that shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Half the data I was working on was also lost or mostly corrupted beyond recognition, thanks a lot Microsoft, thanks a lot for Vista, the destruction of mankind is all but assured now.  I would be very tempted to move over to a Mac (again) but the horrible service at my local Apple Store and inability to correctly fix a problem and cause more just isn’t worth it.  At least I can fix most PC problems myself barring a display failure on the laptop.

Vista hasn’t even gotten off the ground yet and has already failed miserably.  My advice to Microsoft is to release the public beta of Vista SP1 before I lose what sanity I have left, it has to be better than what came out of the box, even ME would almost be better.

If I hadn’t lost the XP CDs that were issued by my college, I may well have wiped Vista from existence last night.

could it be your computer itself or a power surge ?

  3. Jonathan:

It could be a hardware problem… but this never happened on the XP side of things. Couldn’t have been a power surge, I was on battery power at the time (unless there is a problem with the battery which I have no way of knowing until it kind of… explodes.)

  4. Ken:

So you’ve burned thru Ubuntu, Apple and now Vista is crap. I guess Solaris is next? Are you starting to see the pattern?

  5. Jonathan:

Well, OSX is a great operating system, it’s Apple’s choice of suppliers that I can’t stand, they really need to do something about their displays on the iMacs and MacBooks…

As for Ubuntu… it’s usable but only just, I can’t throttle the processor so the fan on the laptop is always running at full speed, which is annoying and eats up battery life.

At least I can fix Vista and use it 95% of the time, if it hadn’t happened during the late night hours, I wouldn’t have been nearly as annoyed by it.

Why in the world would I want to use Solaris?

  6. Ken:

I’m running Ubuntu, and my CPUs throttle fine. So far I’ve fixed the OS 100% of the time. However since I’m not opposed to an occasional command prompt….it’s kind of like high performance automobiles are great fun. People that refuse to use anything but an automatic have no idea what they’re missing.

I was just poking a bit of fun at you. I thought it ironic that after all the complaining of wireless and display drivers bringing your laptop to it’s knees, forcing a re installation, Ubuntu was steaming crap and M$ and OS X being the only operating systems, you were writing “but all I know is here I am half out of my mind in the late night hours trying to sort out a problem that shouldn’t have happened in the first place.”
Then, even though a command line was too much trouble, it was easy to take apart a laptop apart to reseat the card. Linux would have logged the error, and perhaps not required the reinstall-reseat-let’s see what sticks against the wall solution. Gutsy Gibbon is in the final Beta and available here:
