Microsoft releases Windows Media Center Internet TV Beta for Vista, Xbox 360
By Ruben Francia
Microsoft has finally released a beta version of its Windows Media Center Internet TV platform for Windows Vista machines and Xbox 360.
Vista Home Premium and Ultimate users will be able to access free ad-supported TV content without the need for a hardware TV tuner.
Currently, the service is available only in the US and it will be delivered as a Windows Update.
The company told Portal IT that Internet TV will use the YuMe advertising platform, which enables ad placement before, during or after the content, in addition to banners and watermarks.
The beta release of Microsoft’s TV service seems to appear to be limited in content as there are only about 100 hours of programming available during the beta phase. These include:
- Movie trailers from major studios
- Full episodes of TV shows like “Arrested Developmentâ€
- Full-length music concerts by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Elton John, and more
- The latest news segments from MSNBC
- Sports clips from FOX Sports
.
Owners of Xbox 360 can also view the same content available on Windows Vista as the content of Windows Media Center Internet TV beta has been designed for both the TV and PC screen, and features high-quality video optimized for broadband streaming.
While this development aimed to serve Vista and Xbox 360 users, Microsoft’s bigger plan is for streaming content direct to household television.
Recently, the company has announced that Linksys, D-Link and Niveus would soon release their media extenders capable of streaming Internet TV content to high-definition TVs.
