Microsoft touts Vista compatible ‘media extenders’
Microsoft has disclosed that in the coming holiday season TV sets may be used to view movies and Internet videos stored on computer running Windows Vista.
The company together with its hardware partners is planning to release this holiday season several “media extenders†that would bridge TV set and Vista computers.
According to AP, “these [TV set media extenders] will connect wirelessly to computers running the Home Premium or Ultimate flavors of Windows Vista and enable users to use their TV sets to watch movies, TV shows and Internet video that is stored on their computers.
Initial report says that four models of media extenders are on their way. Two models of the extenders are from Linksys while the other two are from D-Link and Niveus.
The Linksys basic media extender model is price at $300 and the higher model with a built-in DVD player is at $350. The D-Link media extender model, which lacks a DVD player but includes a USB port has a price tag of $350.
The Niveus media extender model is targeted for home theater enthusiasts. Its price is yet to be announced, but is expected to be higher than the other models.
Microsoft seems to be deeply involved in the development of these extenders. In fact, the company is set to disclose more information about these extenders at the DigitalLife trade show in New York.
