One easy way to tweak Windows Vista
There are those people who enjoy going into the registry to get every little ounce of performance out of Windows, I’m not one to delve into the registry unless it’s a life or death situation. Someone out there realized this and developed a relatively easy to use program to tweak Vista and make it run better with some increases in speed.
The program is Tweak VI which can be downloaded at the link and comes in two versions, a free version with limited features and a paid version which unlocks all features and lets you install any number of plugins designed for the program.
If you’re after that “one click” optimize solution, I’m afraid you’ll have to ante up for the paid version. But, the free version offers enough features that it’s worth starting there, you can always upgrade later.
From the System Tweaks section you can optimize your hard drives, set prefetch and autorun settings as well as perform processor tweaks. In the free version, memory optimization, pagefile settings, service manager and folder statistics will be unavailable.
There are also several miscellaneous tweaks, visual tweaks and network optimization features that can be performed as well. All are limited in use in the free version but should be enough to satisfy most users.
If you still find the system lacking then consider the paid version after exploring and setting options in the free version.
It also helps to disable startup programs (by using msconfig) but make sure you know what you are turning off before doing so. And some system services are almost useless but again, check to make sure that you don’t/will never need them. Those can be turned off by right clicking “computer” and going to “manage” then to “services and applications.”
Keep in mind that none of this will make that five year old PC that you tried to put Vista on run any faster, this is to make an “acceptable” or “fast” system even faster.
