Privilege Manager enables Vista’s UAC security without the prompts
By Jonathan Schlaffer
There are many things in Windows Vista, mundane things that require UAC authorization, so much so that many individuals have just turned that feature off in the first place. But businesses do not have that luxury, nor do they have the luxury of leaving the tyrant that is UAC on. Privilege Manager will solve those problems.
BeyondTrust makes Privilege Manager to enable UAC authorization for certain tasks without requiring a password. The administrator can set up a list of authorized actions that a user can take and Privilege Manager enables administrator level access as required on an application to application basis. If the user strays from the authorized passed, security is passed on to Vista allowing normal UAC prompts to take over.
With Privilege Manager handling elevated privileges for approved tasks there is no risk to the user in a corporate environment meaning this will reduce their ability to harm the corporate network or spread spyware across the network.
BeyondTrust Privilege Manager costs just around $40 per seat. Best of all the program is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista and functions regardless of UAC status so even if UAC is off, restrictions for specific actions can still be enforced.
