Leaked Vista SP1 installed and analyzed
By Jonathan Schlaffer
If you are one of the lucky few that have managed to get your hands on Vista SP1 then most likely you are enjoying a much improved Vista experience. If you do not have access to a legitimate copy of Vista SP1 (meaning the one Microsoft shipped to testers) then you are on your own to find it.
However, several sites have been given copies of Vista SP1 to install and test, such is the case over at APC Mag. The version of SP1 it recieved was embedded into a full install of Vista itself rather than being a separate update pack. Given Microsoft’s past performance this is probably the best way to install a major operating system update, if you are starting fresh, that’s not really a problem.
For those of us with existing Vista install, this would pose a slight problem but moving from XP SP1 and updating to SP2 posed minimal difficulty for the majority, this will hopefully be the case for Vista SP1.
Installing Vista SP1 will result in a slight version change to the installation from version 6.0.6000 to version 6.0.6001. The kernel used in Windows Server 2008 is version 6.1 but this is a pre-beta service pack so it’s still possible that the final version of the Vista service pack will be version 6.1.
One of the new features included is the “Create a Recovery Disc” application. This does not backup the entire hard drive for a full system restore. This creates a disc that can be used with system recovery if you don’t have the original Vista DVD or cannot access the recovery tools.
APC Mag was impressed with the peformance boost it brought to the test system. Saying, “if this private beta is anything like the final release, it can’t come soon enough.”
