Businesses await on Windows XP SP3 despite Vista released

By Ruben Francia

Businesses await on Windows XP SP3 despite Vista releasedDespite the release of Windows Vista, many XP users, particularly enterprises still await the release of Windows XP SP3, expecting it to be more stable compared to Vista.

The timing of the release of XP SP3 may have some sort of impact on Windows Vista adoption. If Microsoft releases XP SP3 too soon, some XP users and businesses might opt to stay with XP longer rather than moving to Vista.

According to Samir Bhavnani, a research director at Current Analysis West, “A lot of businesses will run XP for a while before they migrate,” he said. “I think people always underestimate how much testing is done before someone upgrades to a new generation OS. Many of Microsoft’s best customers won’t use Vista for years,” IDG writes.

But how much longer Microsoft wants businesses to wait?

According to Microsoft spokesperson, “We’re currently planning to deliver SP3 for Windows XP in the first half of CY2008. This date is preliminary, and we don’t have any more details to share at this time,” Rcpmag writes.

The latest update shows Microsoft has already released a preview code for XP SP3 to a small group of testers but failed to disclose as to when the final version of XP will be out.

The XP SP3 preview code released may not be significant news to businesses but the development shows some progress on Microsoft’s part to get the services pack finally released. The code is about 350Mb and is believed to include fixes that has been resolved by SP2 hotfixes as well as new ones.
