Windows Vista: millions and millions served

Windows Vista: millions and millions served Microsoft has the ability to spin the numbers any way they want and while I doubt very much that there are actually 60 million installations of Vista out there, the company claims to have sold 60 million copies of Vista.  This includes copies shipped to OEMs, copies sitting on machines that have not yet been sold and copies that consumers have actually bought and installed (which is very few, for now).

Previously it had claimed to have sold 20 million copies in the first month and 40 million copies in the first 100 days and now 60 million.  Among these copies, 68% were Home Premium or above, it seems no one wants anything as useless as Home Basic and why should they?

According to ComputerWorld “the 60 million figure excludes the 42 million PCs covered today under corporate volume licenses agreements for Windows.”

Microsoft seems to think they have superceded the Mac install base with Vista already, they haven’t but it is very close to doing so.  Vista is so good that it receives 21% fewer support calls than XP.  That’s according to Microsoft PR so don’t put too much weight in that, it’s still worth mentioning.

Windows XP may be six years old but is still going strong and this is the biggest detriment to Vista since a lot of people still want XP installed on their computer(s).  This will change next year when Microsoft stops shipping Windows XP completely.
