Vista SP1 not to be released until 2009

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Vista SP1 not to be released until 2009 After rumors that Vista SP1 would be “imminently” available, rumors are now floating around that Vista SP1 will not ship in final form until 2009.  Remember, the US Department of Justice is still making Microsoft provide a beta version of the service pack earlier than the final version.  But now the final versions may have been delayed for two whole years.

According to Valleywag, an “ironclad” source at Microsoft has told one of “the largest PC makers” that Vista SP1 will not ship in its final form until 2009.  The company still plans to ship a beta of the service pack later this year, presumably only to comply with the DoJ’s ruling.  If it weren’t for the DoJ, I doubt we would be seeing it at all before 2009.

This delay rumor would make it impossible for Microsoft to ship the next version of Windows by 2010 as some said it might do.  Once again, Mary Jo Foley chimes in thinking that desktop operating systems will be less and less relevant as users move to web based services.  That’s all well and good but I’m not going to pay a monthly access fee (in addition to my monthly Internet bill) to access my files more slowly than I could on a local system, the whole thing is just poorly conceived unless broadband speeds in the US increase dramatically I want nothing to do with a web based desktop, personal file storage or anything resembling such.  The only thing web based storage is good for, last minute emergency backups of important files and that’s it.

Just about every manufacturer is disappointed with the performance of Vista, not only in terms of speed but in terms of sales.  Traditionally, new versions of Windows sold new computers quickly but that is not the case with Vista.  If you don’t already know, the CEO of Acer spoke out saying, “the entire industry is disappointed by Vista.”

If Microsoft continues to face delay after delay then some may contemplate moving over to Mac or Linux.  Well, if Apple can sort out their display issues on all those MacBooks and MacBook Pros and solve the heat issues then sure, buy a Mac but as Macs stand now, I couldn’t recommend them, I will say this, take a look at them in the store on a low brightness setting and look at it at a steep angle, if you can see ripples like a bad refresh rate, then a MacBook is not for you.

Linux, well, frankly is still a joke not because it isn’t a good operating system but because all the software we all know (and love or hate but have to use) and were trained to use is on Windows and some of those bigger ones are even on Mac OSX.  Linux is not a viable alternative in my world, not really, not unless it gets a whole lot better with driver support.

Vista SP1 to be release in 2009 and Windows 7 in 2010? Maybe it is more simple to call Vista SP1 as Windows 7 and release it any time they like…
