Dell warns businesses of Windows Vista woes
Many people would think it would be advantageous for Dell to simply promote Vista as much as it can but it is taking a step back and telling businesses to consider “holding off†on upgrading to Vista immediately.
The move is unusual because Dell makes money from both selling Microsoft’s products and from selling the additional and more expensive hardware that is required to run Vista.
One of the things Vista requires is a 2GB image per user which for a business could mean a lot of lost storage space. Windows XP was fine with a 1GB image and Vista requires twice that. Larger hard drives, all around, please.
In addition to all of that, Dell is warning of compatibility issues with older hardware and software that businesses might currently have deployed.
Dell’s European client services business manager, Niall Fitzgerald, said, “Vista is big and complex and there is a lot to it. It requires a lot of testing. You can’t just shut off XP on Friday and start Vista on Monday morning.â€
Fitzgerald finished off by saying if businesses have concluded all the testing necessary and it can deploy Vista without any major problems, there is no need to wait for the first Vista Service Pack to upgrade.
Hopefully, we all remember the problems that came along when individuals and businesses began rolling out Windows XP SP2, yeah, some cases were pretty bad and some of those same things might happen when Vista SP1 is deployed. It may still be better to wait.
