Broken promises from Microsoft for Vista Ultimate

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Broken promises from Microsoft for Vista Ultimate Vista Ultimate Edition was supposed to be “ultimate” and for the most part, it is. But, some features in Ultimate ship “broken” and require some Ultimate-only plugins to become fully functional. Microsoft was supposed to provide additional Vista Ultimate only software which it has not done yet with users of Vista Ultimate wondering what happened.

In the months since Vista released, Microsoft has not provided any additional add-ons or plugins to speak of or that are really worth mentioning. There are three games to choose from and the add-ons which are to fix some things that came broken in Ultimate Edition, the idea, Microsoft; is to get it right the first time. It’s a game and it’s a game Microsoft plays well. Providing stuff for free to make users think they are getting something for free when they really aren?t.

Scott Dunn, an editor with Windows Secrets is not happy with the way Microsoft is handling the situation, saying in a statement to ComputerWorld, “Extras is not a minor feature of Ultimate, it’s one of the things that sets it apart from Home Premium, and one of the few unique things that has been promised Ultimate users.”

One of the key features that sets Vista Ultimate apart from the other editions is Bitlocker drive encryption, a feature that ships broken and useless. The Bitlocker add-on fixes this problem but this should not have been needed in the first place.

Dunn finished up by saying, “I think users do care about Extras. Ultimate is aimed at the geek crowd, and they’re the very people who looked forward to downloading add-ons. It would be nice if Microsoft honored its own marketing hype.”

My guess is we’ll see the extras at some point between now and when Vienna releases. If not then Microsoft can say “Extras, oh, we meant to release those with Vienna, our bad.”
