Vista-only game cracked to play on Windows XP

June 24, 2007

Vista-only game cracked to play on Windows XPShadowrun, one of the first computer games to take advantage of the “Games for Windows Live” service that offers cross-platform matches between Windows Vista and Xbox 360 gamers, has been reportedly cracked for Windows XP system by a hacking group Razor1911.

It appears that Razor1911 has overcome the requirement for DirectX 10 to play Shadowrun in Windows XP.

The group claims that installing the crack is simply a case of overwriting a few files in the installation folder with the ones provided by Razor.

The Inquirer.net wrote that a text file that ships with the crack states: “Tired of waiting for Falling Leaf to produce drivers so that you can play Shadowrun in XP? The wait is over, because Razor1911 already has the remedy! Yes, you read right. This game will also function in Windows XP”.

Falling Leaf Studios, an organization founded with the singular goal of providing software intended to run on only one operating system, to users of various other operating systems, had previously said it was working on ”compatibility software” to allow Vista-only games like Shadowrun and Halo 2 to run on Windows XP machines.

But it appears that they’ve been beaten to the punch Razor1911, who are probably now working on Halo 2 “compatibility software”.
