Law firm decides to keep XP over upgrading to Vista

Law firm decides to keep XP over upgrading to Vista Stephenson Harwood, an international law firm has decided to keep using Windows XP on its computers rather than upgrade to Windows Vista. The firm decided this was best in order to maintain compatibility with its existing suite of applications.

Chris Petrie, director of IT at the law firm said there are many applications that law firms use specific to the legal system that do not support Vista. Some are working on Vista compatible versions and some don’t seem to care.

“We are going through a major refresh, changing a lot of software. We have had a very good IT culture here with very good uptime. It is down to our attention to detail and using well-tested products,” said Petrie.

Computer Weekly says the firm is also looking for ways to better secure their hardware possibly by using Intel’s vPro chip-based security. It will also be deploying Virtualization software by VMWare to combat heat issues and cut electricity use.

SecureWave Sanctuary is also in use which prevents unauthorized systems from accessing network resources and only allows approved applications to connect to the network. Sounds like someone doesn’t want the lawyers “not working” while in the office but may not have work to do. Nevertheless introducing all these applications has reduced help desk calls enough to make the cost worth it.
