NSW Department of Education chooses Windows XP over Vista

By Ruben Francia

NSW Department of Education chooses Windows XP over VistaThe Australia NSW Department of Education and Training announced that the department has made its decision to standardize its computing environment using Vista’s predecessor, Windows XP Professional.

The standardization project is a four years plan which will give schools and TAFE colleges some 100,000 new computers, Stephen Wilson, NSW Education’s chief information officer said.

Some NSW schools and TAFE students are scheduled to receive new desktop computers in the succeeding months.

Unlike most organization that hold its migration plan because of technical issues, the decision by the department for choosing Windows XP over Vista anchored on its current need.

“I’m honestly of the opinion that we don’t need the latest and greatest of everything,” Wilson told Australian IT. “It doesn’t always represent the best value for money because you’re always paying for the latest and greatest,” he added.

Wilson said that the department would be able to upgrade its OS software to Windows Vista but failed to disclosed details of OS migration plan.

However, the department was expected to upgrade its computer specification prior to the next T4L purchase round, Wilson said.
