Free copies of DivX Pro for Windows and Mac
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Starting yesterday, DivX Pro became free for both Windows and Mac. It will only be free for a limited time and I don’t know when it will expire, if it hasn’t already, it will very soon so grab your copy while you can.
Everyone likes free stuff, even if they don’t use it. I like free software, especially when I can nab a “pro” version of something for nothing. I’ve never really used DivX but maybe I will give it a go since I am now getting all of the features and benefits for free and you should as well.
In order to get this offer all you need to do is head over to either the Mac version or Windows version download, grab the copy and for the Mac version you will need to enter a valid email address before downloading, your serial key will be sent there. The Windows version will ask for your email during installation.
With DivX Pro you get the DivX converter, DivX Converter MPEG-2/DVD Plug-in, DivX Pro Codec, of course the DivX Player and the DivX Web Player.
Not bad at all. I’ll finally be able to archive a good deal of my movies to my hard drive, a useful feature, of course I can do that now but this will make it more or less a “one click” deal. I’m happy to report that as of 10am, June 8, 2007 (US Eastern time) the offer is still good, as I said earlier, I’m not sure for how long it will be.
I’m sad to report that the latest version of DivX does not run on Windows Vista, though you will be able to install it, it will not run, not even with all the coaxing in the world.
Yes, it’s ironic that the one thing newsworthy today doesn’t work with what this blog is all about, I am well aware of that and I figured I’d mention that before someone else did in the comments.

This is well and truly a bummer.
Damn you Vista, damn you to hell!

It does not preclude you from getting a serial key as you can still install it, it just won’t run. Presumably, the serial key can be used more than once but this is something I cannot confirm.

Well, as of Sunday June 10, the free download is gone, at least the windows version I checked.
