Adobe releases Acrobat 8.1 for Windows Vista and Office 2007

By Ruben Francia

Adobe releases Acrobat 8.1 for Windows Vista and Office 2007Adobe has released the first version of its Acrobat software that is fully compatible with Microsoft’s Windows Vista and Office 2007 productivity suite.

One of the highlights of Acrobat 8.1 is in its integration with Office 2007 giving users the capability to create a PDF file by right-clicking the mouse from within an application.

The second most exciting feature is the PDF Preview Handler. Under this feature, users can now preview PDF files within email messages in Office Outlook 2007 as well as in Windows Explorer on Windows Vista without starting Acrobat or Adobe Reader.

In addition, the new release will allow Mac users to view Flash movies within Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1 instead of using QuickTime.

Professional and standard editions of Acrobat 8.1 are available as a free download for existing Acrobat users, Adobe said. For Windows users the updates can be downloaded here, and Mac users will find their files here.

Users who do not have Acrobat 8.0 Professional or Standard version may download the free version of Adobe Reader 8.1 to view PDF documents.

New features in Adobe Reader 8.1 include:

  • Improved forms performance.
  • Acrobat 8 3D support: Precise CAD data (PRC), Product Manufacturing Information (PMI).
  • Integrated FedEx Kinko’s Print Online: Send any PDF directly to FedEx Kinko’s Print Online for printing.

While the previous version of Acrobat could run on Windows Vista and with Office 2007, it does not fully support all new apps’ interface wrinkles, or 64-bit computing. Acrobat 8.0 shipped in November, prior to the January debut of Windows Vista and Office 2007, resulting in partial compatibility with the products.

Compatibility problems between Acrobat 8.0 and Vista and Office 2007 are expected to be fixed with this release. Adobe said that the update fixes a number of issues that were discovered after the release of Adobe Reader 8.0.
