Dell drops extended warranties on Ubuntu systems

Dell drops extended warranties on Ubuntu systemsDell has ever so quietly removed the option of getting two and four year warranties on its Ubuntu offerings as well as removing the option for the “Complete Care” package. These options remain on Vista and XP systems.

I can understand Dell not wishing to support Ubuntu but not willing to support the hardware just because it happens to have Ubuntu installed is on the brink of insanity. Granted, it probably isn’t as profitable to sell an Ubuntu system as opposed to a comparable Vista system but cut us some slack here, Dell.

The moral of the story is, if you want an extended warranty buy a Vista system or live with the limited choice of warranties available on the Ubuntu offerings. Besides, at four yours, you’re probably going to be looking at a new laptop anyway.

I think my line of insulting Ubuntu at every turn is getting old so I’m not going to revist that point, we knew it would get old and gotten old it has.  It all ended up with me getting a Mac as my primary laptop and that’s all you really need to know.

Due to an ordering system glitch during the weekend, we inadvertently removed extended warranty and CompleteCare options from our “configurator.” We’re working to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible and those options will be reinstated this afternoon. If customers ordered systems when extended warranties weren’t available, they will have the option of upgrading at the original price. There will be more details on that program soon. We’ve also posted this update to our blog as well, in case you want to link to it: http://www.direct2dell.com
