It’s not Vista Capable, it’s Liberated by Ubuntu

June 2, 2007

If you have been keeping up with the site you will now that I am no lover of Ubuntu or Vista for that matter, I simply accept Vista for my gaming needs for everything else, I use my brand new MacBook. Let’s try not to comment about a new Mac user writing about Vista because I still use Vista and I’ve basically used Microsoft Windows my entire life, DOS before that.

To get to the point, there is some Ubuntu propaganda floating around that it’s easy to install and configure, that may be, as long as you don’t have an ATi graphics card and are fine using a command line to work around that, I’m not so I didn’t bother and I never will (that is, will again).

But the folks over at this site (I’m not sure what it’s called) have come up with a rather unique take on the situation by creating a "Liberated by Ubuntu Linux" sticker.

Vista has its faults, more than one I’m afraid, it’s propensity to detest older hardware and refusal to use XP drivers for hardware that does not yet (and may never) have a Vista driver. Using a XP driver on Vista can cause Blue Screens, at least in my case it has but I need that hardware to function at least part of the time, Blue Screen or not.

Since this is now on Digg, I have no doubt someone will begin producing these stickers so you can slap them on your (Ubuntu enabled) laptop. Or, don’t bother and go buy a Mac, your choice, make the right one and there is only one right answer you know?

Tut tut, there is no need to hit the command line for ATI, try using a version of ubuntu which is under 3 years old. You might as well rant on about the mac only having one mouse button.

As a user of Vista, Mac and Ubuntu

Mac is my choice, followed by Ubuntu! For gaming purposes, I use consoles :)

So just because you use Vista for games and like almost everyone in the world have used Windows before you think your opinion is as valid as someone’s who uses it for everything? You people must think if you move the mouse in Vista you are in a priviledged position to give an insight of Vista like you’ve used it intensively for 1 month or something, even though you are short-minded Apple fanboys. Why would I buy a computer I’ll have to reboot every 15 minutes every time I want to play a game or run Windows-only software (more than 50%) and which mouse only has 1 button?
I’d say as a user of Vista who has used Mac and Ubuntu, Vista is my 1st and only choice. If I had to place the others it would be Mac 2nd and Ubuntu 3rd and last. For all-round purposes, I use Vista. :)

I have worked on Windows for the last 10 years or so. I have used vista for half a year, and I hated it from the start. I didn’t like where microsoft was going with the system. They made it all so impractical.

“This user is ranting about vista, cancel or allow?” I need to press allow to move a freaking folder. The desktop looks completely shit. It doesn’t support some of my hardware. They broke backwards compatibility, and so on.

I was thinking of trying linux for awhile. But I was happy with XP, everything worked fine. There were some flaws, but I could look over that because the major advantage of compatibility. Now that they threw that away with Vista. I don’t have a reason to still use Windows.

I made the switch to ubuntu a few months ago. I completely love it, it is just some much more practical. It supports all my hardware right from the start. I can find any software available in repository. I can run any windows application using wine, and yes, even games. I still boot to vista for most of my gaming, but I can do all the rest perfectly fine in ubuntu.

@Filipe Vista is fine if all you do is gaming, but gaming is just half of what I use my computer for.

I also dislike Vista a lot, I can not see why you like it, I read a post from you saying I will not use Ubuntu untill ALL works exactly as in Vista, why not the opposite?

I have a dual core 64 laptop and with Ubuntu runs sincerely much faster than Vista, I had to erase Vista because the laptop even pretty new feels sluggish with it, but that it is not the case with Ubuntu.

I really love Ubuntu. And also I dont play computer games too much. I prefer my PS3 :)
