Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 spotted?

May 22, 2007

Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 spotted? The WinFuture.de folks managed to grab a quick snapshot of a PC they thought running a build of Vista SP1 during one of the Rally talks at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles recently.

If you look closely the PC in the demo running screen (you see picture above), the top screen says “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.” But this could be a ruse.

One big question still unanswered. Will there be any more service packs at all for Vista?

Some folks were starting to wonder whether Microsoft might try to go without one and just use Automatic Update and Windows Update Services to roll out all of the Vista fixes and updates.

“In the past, SP1 is where we came out with tools and guidance,” so that’s why so many businesses tended to wait until SP1 before deploying Windows in the past, Brad Goldberg, general manager of Windows client, told ZDnet. But these days, “SP1 is not a relevant (deployment) milestone,” Goldberg added.

Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry also told ZDnet that “It appears that a number of people within Microsoft think that the full fledged service pack is no longer needed, because Windows Update provides a mechanism to get fixes to customers. Because everyone can download the fixes they need as soon as they are released, there is less need have rollups or service packs.

What we are holding up to now is just the word given by Senior Vice President of Server Tools Bob Muglia last year. He said, “Microsoft’s goal is to release Vista SP1 at the same time as Windows Server Longhorn, which is currently slated to ship in the latter half of 2007”.

Now we just need an SP1 date, beyond Muglia provided.
