IE7 begins crashing after May 8 update

By Jonathan Schlaffer

If you aren’t familiar with the term “patch Tuesday” it refers to the one Tuesday of every month where Microsoft releases updates for their software, Windows and other alike. It seems that after the May 8th update last week some users are experiencing crashing or unusable IE7 sessions.  Both IE7 on Windows XP and Vista are affected.

Frankly, I haven’t noticed because I do not use IE7, if you were smart you would do the same thing. I can’t see any real reason to use IE7 except when it is necessary for viewing websites that don’t render correctly in Opera or Firefox. Other than that IE7 is right out, as it should be.

Having just started IE7 for the first time in about a week, mine is fine but others are having serious problems.

It seems that the patch(es) moved the Temporary Internet Files folder on some computers and the new folder doesn’t have the same permissions as the old one and IE7 in its infinite wisdom will sit there twiddling its thumbs waiting for the permissions to occur as if its magic.

There are two solutions to the problem and please, use this only if you are experiencing this bug as described in the Computer World article.

One is to give the new folder the same permissions as the old one or move it back to the default location. Why some simple updates caused this is beyond me and I’m almost certain Microsoft wasn’t expecting this either.

I’m slightly amused because if someone else had not found out about this flaw, I wouldn’t have known about it since I rarely use IE7, why don’t you do the same?

I’ve been using IE 7 almost as soon as it came out. Every. Single. Day.
I don’t think I’m smarter than the average bear, but I have steadfastly refused to download any extensions (with the exception of CALLINGID) and have absolutely no problems with the program nor the updates.
