Microsoft doesn’t have fans
By Jonathan Schlaffer
It seems that Microsoft lacks a cult following or a cult of any kind for that matter. There is real no excitement around Windows products, Office or any of their other products except for the XBOX 360 which seems to have a rather devout following but all consoles do so that’s nothing new.
Where are those that are willing to prop up Vista on a pedestal and say hey, look this is a great product or the guy who goes around saying nothing bad about Office 2007. These people do not exist and they never will for one very simple fact, Microsoft has a majority of the operating system market.
It has the largest market share for desktop operating systems, office suites and other arenas and it seems no one wants to outwardly support the large corporation in town.
Apple has a following and I don’t think I’ve met a group of people that are pickier about a product than anyone. Though, just about everyone seems willing to support the iPod so that would be a poor example. Let’s take Macs. Macs have a devout following, there are no such things in the PC World and probably never will be.
Even Linux has a following. Why? I’m still working on that one. Maybe because it’s free, maybe because you can get it do to what you want rather than having the operating system tell you HOW to do things, maybe it’s “all the above.â€
And yet, there is no such thing in Microsoft land. As the article at Ars Technica puts it, Microsoft is happy with “total world domination†and if it has that, why would it need a loyal following?

Microsoft has plenty of fans, they just don’t feel so emotionally inadequate as the Apple fanbois who feel the need to compare their chosen product in public, on a day to day basis. What fun is that? The “competition” is a bunch of smug and snotty twits with 3 to4% marketshare, versus 90%+ marketshare. MSFT fans would get bored commenting everyday that Apple & Linux are STILL being outsold at 10 to 1 or 20 to 1 ratios.

Im a big fan of MS, as are millions of 360 gamers. Im sorry Mr. Schlaffer but maybe you havent heard that the 360 has sold over 10 million units. Or perhaps you didnt quite catch the fact that over 1 billion people have used MS’s Operating systems. Windows? Not ringing a bell? Perhaps you should get out more.

Yes, I heard that, the 360 is the exception, in fact, it’s one of the very first things I say. A lot of people use Windows but they don’t have tried and true loyal fans who will stick by them no matter what. Those people belong to the Mac or Linux crowd.
People that use Microsoft are probably like me, it’s convenient, most programs are written for Windows, Office is a standard as are a number of things that run on Windows. If the wind should change in favor of Mac, I would drop my PC in a heartbeat.

There are “cult” fans of Microsoft - they have the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional program. I think you could characterize the MVPs as ardent supporters and similar to the evangelistic guys of the Linux group.

I AM A MICROSOFT FAN, AND A MAC HATER. I SPEND MY TIME DISSING MAC ADS ON YOUTUBE, PLAYING ON MY 360 AND WILL BE LISTENING TO ZUNE.
NEARLY ALL OF MY FRIENDS ARE MICROSOFT FANS ASWELL.
F*** you if you think there’s no “Microsoft Cult”

M$ fans are just stupid typical consumers, feed them **** and they will eat it as long as everybody else is doing it.
No, there is no such thing as M$ fans following, in terms of intelligent ones.

Okay, I don’t understand what happened here especially with Mega Man and Microsoft Fan. Number one, before posting a comment actually reading the article is a prerequisite note the one exception is the XBOX 360, I own a XBOX 360 and I am a XBOX 360 fan, that does not mean you are a fan of Microsoft, simply ONE and only ONE of their products but this is not their primary business.
I don’t like Microsoft as a whole, as I said it’s convenient for most people to just use Microsoft products (Windows, Office… etc.) This doesn’t mean Microsoft is bad… just not great.
Hate Apple… well, something is really wrong with you if you do.
Maybe I should have filed this under “opinion” instead. I think Hamad and uhmm have it down pat.

Mr. Schlaffer,
MegaMan doesn’t know how to read or write.
An interesting twist to you point of view… I would like nothing more than to ditch Windows, but I’m poor and yet expect my cheap computer to work well. No matter which version of Linux I install, it doesn’t work as well as XP. No matter which flavor of Mac I look to purchase, the pricing cannot compete with a PC. So, I’m stuck. I’m FORCED to be a fan and that’s not comfortable.
Great post… thanks,
P

“Macs have a devout following, there are no such things in the PC World and probably never will be.”
I have trouble understanding what the author was trying to say with this sentence. Does he not consider Macintosh as a PC?
What I can agree with is the somewhat rabid fandom of those who use OSX? I have never thought of myself as really very much interested in who made the engine in my car as long as it does what I want it to do. And yes, I have both a Mac and Windows PC.
