Vista SP1: Intel, Dell pre-requisite to Windows Vista internal rollout
By Ruben Francia
Intel has disclosed that it intends to begin its internal Vista roll out only once the Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 has been released. Computer maker Dell has also revealed that it is likely to take the same approach.
Both companies told ZDNet UK that they would be delaying widespread deployment until SP1.
Intel Europe’s director of IT, Martin Mueller, said that Service Pack 1 (SP1) of Vista would be “tied to the (Centrino Pro) platform.” As such, it is expected that Intel’s Vista deployment would commence once Centrino Pro computers have become widely available.
Mueller added that part of the reason to delay its Vista rollout is to “make sure that all our internal applications operate with Office 2007 and Vista.â€
Dell for its part has not yet rolled out Vista internally. Director of client marketing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Eric Greffier, said “We are pretty much in the same position as Intel within Dell. We knew we would roll out Vista internally faster than any other OS (but) if we are at the SP1 level it is going to be safer.”
However, Greffier said that the security features inherent to Vista will make large companies’ migration “almost mandatory.” He emphasized that to get ready for next year organizations need to start thinking about migration to Vista now.
Most federal agencies also reported that they delay their Vista roll out until the release of Vista’s SP1.
All these development will somewhat pressure Microsoft to release Vista’s SP1. But until now, the company did not give any word on its release date. However, many analysts are placing the release date close to the end of the year around the October/November time frame or whenever Longhorn server ships.
