Non-Aero Glass capable Vista systems get Vista Movie Maker

April 8, 2007

Non-Aero Glass capable systems get Vista Movie Maker Microsoft initially overlooked something when they released Vista (besides the security flaws and missing features). Vista includes a new version of Windows Movie Maker, for all intents and purposes should be called Vista Movie Maker. The problem is GottaBeMobile discovered this version of Movie Maker is not compatible with systems that have integrated graphics not capable of running Aero Glass, the new GUI (graphical user interface) in Vista.

For those who haven’t heard, Aero Glass adds many visual effects to Vista including transparency, the flip 3D view mode and thumbnail previews of minimized programs on the taskbar. Most of those features are not available without Aero Glass. The Aero Glass GUI is not included on the cheapest version of Vista, Vista Basic.

For a while, those without an Aero Glass system or with Vista Basic were not able to use the new version of Movie Maker until now. Movie Maker 2.6 has been released for systems that do not support using Vista Movie Maker and that includes Vista Basic as well.

It should be noted that Vista Movie Maker and Movie Maker 2.6 are two different but similar versions. They are close enough that you will not notice a difference, the only one being that Movie Maker 2.6 will run on systems that do not support Aero Glass and Vista Movie Maker will not.

The types of systems with non-existent Aero Glass support include older Tablet PCs and current UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PC) from the likes of Samsung or the OQO Model 02 (though not a UMPC as such it does not support Aero Glass). Any other system that does not support Aero Glass probably features an integrated graphics chip from Intel, though their newer versions do support Aero Glass.

It’s still too bad that Vista Movie Maker won’t run on those systems but Movie Maker 2.6 is capable enough.
