AOL to release Vista-compatible AIM 6.1

By Ruben Francia

AOL to release Vista-compatible AIM 6.1AOL announced the release of AIM 6.1, the first version of AIM compatible with Windows Vista. The client software has been in beta testing for a number of months but finally out of beta phase and is available for download now via FileForum.

The new Microsoft Vista compatible AIM offers a variety of new features, including Mobile Enhancements, Buddy List Docking, Buddy List Color Picker and Account Linking Update.

Through Mobile Enhancements, users can send either an offline IM or an SMS message when a buddy logs off of AIM, and restrict those who can send an instant message to their cell phone.

Users on the Vista operating system would get extra personalization facilities. The Buddy List Docking lets AIM users attach their Buddy List to either side of their desktop, resizing the desktop so other applications don’t cover the Buddy List, while the Buddy List Color Picker allows user to change the color of their Buddy List and other instant messaging window elements.

With AIM 6.1, users can also view their linked AOL accounts at the top of the Buddy List and set individual away messages and invisibility options for each linked screen name.

AOL has also revamped its Internet Explorer AOL Toolbar, which has some AIM features built-in, and optimized it for Windows Vista. Starting Tuesday, Internet Explorer browser users can download a stand-alone version of the Vista toolbar while Firefox users will have their own version available during the week of April 2.

Additionally, AOL plans to upgrade the beta version of its latest Web mail offering to include an expanded integrated instant messaging capability. Although AOL’s Web mail has included instant messaging functions since 2004, the update means users can participate in full chats from within their Web browser.

This announcement will be good news especially for AIM users who have updated their computers to the Vista operating system.
